Equipping our volunteer firefighters with the basics – so they can do the extraordinary

Ask any firefighter on the line what they “need” and they’ll give you the same answer: “Nothing.” Because they trained to do their jobs under incredibly challenging circumstances – and they do it well. But there’s something to be said for a cold drink and a warm meal after a burly day’s work. And with firefighting resources getting stretched to the brink, their days are getting burlier. During the 2020 Walbridge Fire we began to distribute “fire engine comfort kits” to the Volunteer Fire Companies in unincorporated parts of Sonoma County – areas where financial resources are often lean. It was nothing fancy: a portable cook system and coffee maker with dehydrated meals and instant coffee to go with them; sometimes a cooler; always Guayakí Yerba Mate. But they were a hit. So now, with the generous support of Williams-Sonoma, Sports Basement, and other phenomenal partners (see below), we have committed to delivering kits to every Sonoma County fire department with an active volunteer program. That’s 59 stations but hey, you can’t put a price on morale.
